Even Small Ponds Change a Garden

To add a focal point to landscaping many homeowners are deciding on ponds and even small ponds can change the overall look of a garden, flower bed or patio.

It is not advisable to attempt to keep fish in small ponds as there is usually not enough water to support more than the odd one or two but by adding aquatic plants they can bring a completely new look to the garden.

However, if using small ponds, large plants should not be planted around the close area as they will hide them from view and spoil the intended appearance. Really small ponds, and by really small we mean less than a few feet in diameter should not pretend to be a focal point of the landscaping, as it will probably just get lost in the overall view. Instead it can be used to offset other, equally sized objects within the landscaping.

Also, unless there is an aeration pump fitted on the pond, you are going to have to change the water frequently because very small ponds are soon overcome by stagnant water. Ideally, a small pump can be added, perhaps with a small figurine to keep the water in the pond circulating, this will keep algae growth to the minimum and will keep the water clean and clear. If installed near shrubs or under trees, be prepared to be continually removing leaves, twigs and other yard debris from the water's surface before it gets chance to sink to the bottom and clog the pump.

Installation

With small ponds it requires little work to install and your biggest problem will probably be having the electric outlet installed close to the pond's location. A grounded outlet is required and most communities require installation to be carried out by a professional. Once the power outlet is installed, turn the pond upside down and mark the ground so you know where to dig the hole. Once digging is complete, place the pond inside the hole and verify the top is level with or just below the surface of the ground.

Make sure you fill small ponds with water before turning on the pump to prevent it from operating dry and then sit back and enjoy the sound of the water as it splashes through the pond. Small water figurines to suit just about any taste can be found with additional statues made to help recycle the water from the pond through the pump and then back into the pond.

There should also be an additional water supply handy to replace water lost due to evaporation or from animals and pets splashing in the water to cool off. Even small ponds can be a target for animals cooling off in the extreme heat.
