Making Bucket Homemade Pond Filters

This article explains how you can save money with homemade pond filters.

Homemade pond filters can be as effective as those filters which are bought in stores. You just need to be able to do it well for it to function the way it should. If you study ready to use pond filters, you will get the gist of how homemade pond filters are supposed to work.

Homemade pond filters are more economical than store bought ones and they can last as long as those bought in stores as well. There are actually several different kinds of pond filters that can be made at home. We will take a look at the bucket type homemade pond filters.

Steps to Making Homemade Pond Filters

You will need a plastic pail or a plastic garbage receptacle, depending on the size of your pond. You can buy filtration material or you can utilize old foam or fiberfill from cushion as filtration material for your homemade pond filters. A waterproof pump is also needed to direct water into the pail. The size of the pump will also depend on the size of your pond and the water in it.

Make a hole at the side of the pail, very close to the bottom. Stuff the filtration material into the pail. You can either roll or fold the filtration material in such a way that the water is sure to pass through each layer. Make sure that the filtration material is tightly secured in the pail or that the pail is packed full with the filtration material. This homemade pond filter can be weighed down by some loose rocks or gravel.

Place the pump in the water, where you place it will depend on you. The exit pipe from the pump should go to the top of the pail with the filtration material. The water that goes through the homemade pond filters will exit through the hole at the bottom of the pail. This water is already filtered and you will notice a difference in your pond in as little as a day, depending on the size of your pond.

Homemade pond filters may need changing of filtration material in as often as three days especially if this is the first time you have installed one in a filthy pond. When the water is relatively clear, you might like to change the filtration material in the homemade pond filters every two or three months. Make sure you to unplug the water pump before you venture into the water to retrieve it for upkeep of the homemade pond filters.
